I've only seen one of him from before I was born, and that was when he was in his skinny, geeky (probably where I get that from), early 20's... hippie love beads of the time and all. No offense intended in this description of how he looked in that photo. I possibly might have seen one from when he was about three, but I'm not positive, there really weren't a lot of pictures of dad from when he was younger.

I described what I'd seen to my mother, who had been with him since about seven years before I was born. She was the one that verified that yes, that's what he used to look like from different periods of his life.Interesting! Thanks! Also got a little story time too, can't complain :)

I'd love to get my hands on some pictures of him from his youth... but his foster/adoptive parents had most of the ones that were in existance. Sadly, after their deaths, their only biological child destroyed all the photos they had, both the ones I'd been allowed to see as a kid (g'ma and g'pa's trips to other countries) and "family" photos (most of which were kept away from all "children" to protect them).I won't ask why they did it, but destroying all those photos seems like a real shame.

After my grandpa died, i had a dream in which i escorted him through a building which was supposed to be the place where spirits go to find out their destination. My grandmother (I call her Me-me) was with him. she had died about 3 months before grandpa. O_o a while later i had a dream where he came to talk to me about my college education. he was very happy i was doing well. o.o in both dreams he was about thirty with brownish hair. i found out that's how he looked when he was thirty. :D while it may have been my mind coping with his passing, i like to think that maybe i did spiritually connect with him...somehow.

In my experience I learned that this world is merely a line inbetween two realms. The first, Reikai or Shikongai The Realm of the Dead or simply 2nd Earth as a friend and I call it, is home to mythical creatures, spirits, and deities. Here it looks like the world around us, except some being one may recognize from some paranormal anime or games from elementals to Devil children (beings who are in the case of the spirit world, part man (or soul), part demon and some yokai are more humanoid in appearance (for example kitsune). Others more anthropomorphic. A note: Tengu wear masks that make them seem long nosed. ;) Then a native of the spirit realm, to my surprise a Shingon deity, Jizo Bosatsu took me on a tour. The first place we stopped was a huge compound, which he said was from my past. I told him I barely knew the place; a huge mansion with two dragon statues along the walkway, and Ni-Oh statues at the gate. Out of no where, I saw shinobi and kunoichi come out welcoming me. Something about it felt familiar, and Jizo told me it was my old home.
I'll get to the rest of Reikai later, next up is the Underworld. As I entered through the Kimon; the Oni Gate, I saw a world where the winds are ever turbulent, the buildings were in ruin, and the skies were red as blood, swirling in a circle, with a huge hole in the center, as if to bring in the lost souls cursed by their own evil deeds (look up Tokko for a good idea). At the time I didn't realize I was in the land of the damned.

Wait a moment! Did you just call people who are half youkai (eg. kitsune) - "Devil Children"? So Abe no Seimei enters that classification then, his mother being a fox?

No. Yokai and demons are two different creatures. Yokai for one have souls, and some are manifestations of nature as a whole. Like the Angels of Western Culture they help influence. Demons on the other hand are souless, savage beasts. In Abe no Seimei's case he's Han-you, a human with yokai's blood. In this case a Minaki, spirit messenger foxes of the goddess Inari. A Yokai is a sprite, a being of nature. They're a more humane in nature, and have most of them are beautiful in appearance, and Devil Children or those born from the union of a Devil and a Human. Like Han You they are usually human. Its only in later years that signs of Demon energy is shown. Some of them can control it, others have them sealed. Each group of yokai have a function

For example:
Kitsune: Tricksters and Messengers of Rice Kami, Lady Inari/
Oni: Guaridans of the Realm of the Dead, and Enma Daioh's "Secretaries" for lack of a better word. (contrary to popular belief they are more human in appearance. Look up Onimusha for a clue of what I mean)
Konoha Tengu- Guardians of the Mountain and keepers of the Dharma. (some are associated with Ninpo and Shugendo sects)
Tatsu: Dragons of the realms of heaven, mankind, and nature. Some are good and some were evil beyond reason.
The prominent ones are Ryujin; the Dragon Deity, and Seiryu; Guardian of the Eastern Heavens.
As for Kirin and Kohryu; they go hand in hand at times, as guardians of the central heavenly domains.
In the Spirit Realm there are countless dimensional lleylines. Each dimension houses different forms of Yokai, Tenbu, Kami, and Demons.
I trust you know of the 4 Sacred Guardians?

Remember that each perceives the spirit world and it's layout in different ways. As an example, being dragon souled and visiting "the dragon real" I have experienced a different layout than a particular famous author that has written about the dragon realm. Neither experience nor "map" are wrong, just different. So to with the "spirit world" and different "parts" there of...

I well know the differences between youkai and demons are, and I don't think they're as simple as you say, Kohryu. Also, the ShiJin would be considered gods, especially to me personally, so please stop reffering to them as guardians, or use their Chinese/Japanese title.

I'm not fully human - which I don't like talking about for obvious reasons - so I wish you would be more careful about your phrasing in the future before unintentionally insulting someone.
And I agree with Rain - what you percieve in your truth may differ from others.

I'm not fully human either. And I apologize if you were offended.
