A lantern youkai I know is chouchin-obake (there's also oi no bakemono), also the carriage youkai (which is oboro-guruma) - I don't know the name of the sandal one.
Also, 'cause you were interested in popular youkain in Japan, as well as Kitsune, Tanuki/Mujina and Kappa, Hihi and Yamabiko are quite common, as is noppera-bou, kami-mai etc. (I thought I had mentioned them earlier, but I must have taken it out or something ^^; ). But due to their association with Inari, Kitsune are probably the easiest to look at (and tanuki, with which they had a nasty rivalry ^^; . ...but I don't think there's anything on the kori no tatakai in English).
Anyway, if you wanted to look at beings that would explain certain things of nature as well, there's Namazu-gami (which was for earthquakes), mouryou (ate corpses), ayakashi (or "ikuchi", which caused shipwrecks), and also chou-keshin (as an example for afterlife/reincartnation). They might be helpful if you were going to go down that path at all... *someone felt like reading her youkai book*

Thanks, this is very helpful! And I finally realized the difference between Mujina and Noppera-bou. Is there a difference between Mujina and Tanuki though?
Also, what book is this? I can't read anything other than hiragana just yet, but I might want to acquire it once I can actually understand what's going on. xD

It depends on region. Sometimes mujina and tanuki are the same things, sometimes they're different, sometimes mujina means badger rather than racoon dog, and sometimes it's vice-versa. Basically though, from most of the people I know, mujina is seen as folklore, whereas a tanuki is also a real animal. Well, the book I find quite helpful is "Youkai Hyaku-Monogatari" (妖怪百物語 or 妖怪100物語). There's a few different books of these, but I like ones for primary students. The Japanese is easier and they tend to give you a nice overview to point you in the right direction to find more information. My one is by Mizuki Shigeru. Also, this kids site is sometimes helpful for getting the basics of a youkai you might be looking for (but it's in Japanese too; the names here are in hiragana though): http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~youkai-kids ... aiueo.htmlIf you're really in need of one of them in particular, I don't mind translating these ('cause they're reasonably short).

I'll definitely have to keep that website in my bookmarks. Sorry, I should have been more clear, I can read hiragana but I can't understand what most of it is saying yet, as I am only in my first semester of Japanese. xDD
I'll have to look around and see if there are any already-translated versions. At the moment I'm only making the outline of my paper, so I'm not researching just yet. xP

The following are the youkai that are usually present in the television shows that I have watched:
- kitsune - tengu - hitodama - kappa - tanuki - yuki-onna - kasa-obake

Thanks Rhaine! And thanks to whoever changed the title of the post, it makes more sense now.

QueenoftheSmileys wrote: Thanks! I definitely should include some tsukumo-gami in my paper. Does anyone remember the names of the sandal and paper lantern versions?
Chochin-obake is a tsukumogami created from the chochin lantern. It is typically portrayed with one eye, and a long tongue protruding from an open mouth.
Bakezori is a tsukumogami created from straw zori sandal. It runs through the house and chants "kararin, kororin, kankororin!"
