Long ago in the mountains of China, a stone egg on Huaguoshan Mountain hatched. born from it was a baby monkey boy. The boy would be named Sun Wukong aka Son Goku 孫悟空(in my run-ins with him he prefers to be called Son Goku by me and my friends). In a valley hidden by the mystic waterfall curtain, he and his primate subjects lived in peace. But he knew that despite all his power and their glory, they still had Death to fear. So in hopes of gaining the secret to immortality, Goku went to the Taoist Immortal Bodhi. Through his teachings he gained immense supernatural powers. Bodhi made him swear never to reveal who taught him. Soon after, he became one of the most established Yokai in the world, and seeking a weapon worthy of him, he traveled the seas and found the fabled Nyoi Kintaga Bou from the palace of the East Sea's Dragon King. After defeating the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas he formed a fraterinty with Gyu Ma-ou, Kou Ma-ou, Shishi-ou, and Sarusaru-ou. He would then defy Hell's attempt to claim his soul, when he wiped his name from the book of life and death, along with some of the monkey's he knew. The Lung Wang and the Diyu-wang would then report this to Lord Yu Huangdi 玉皇帝, head of the Celestial Burearcracy and ruler of the Taoist Heavens. Gyokkoutei-sama invited him to his palace, and Goku thought he would recieve a title of high merit, but he was given the lowest station, Protector of the Celestial Horses. When he found out he rebelled against the Jade Emperor, proclaiming himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. Goku even stole the Queen Mother of the West's Peaches of Immortality and Lao-Tzu's pills of longevity, and caused pandemonium in the Celestial Kingdom, until Buddha himself intervened. After Buddha defeated him in a game, Goku was banished from heaven and was imprisoned beneath a mountain in a cage Buddha created. The Queen Mother sentenced him to 500 years of incarceration, and 500 years passed until he met the priest Xuanzang, and accompanied him on his journey west to retireve holy sutras from India.

Have you guys seen the Chinese animated stories of Sun Wukong? I used to watch them as a child on tv and I LOVED the Monkey King. Such a rascal I actually found someone who found and restored them privately since you can't get them anywhere. Well "can't"; supposedly a few are available in Chinese with no subs/dubs but I don't know Chinese. Anyway, this industrious person was kind enough to share them and all his hard work with me some time back. I felt so lucky that day ^_^

I suggest reading "Journey to the West" which will lead you through his adventures. It is a several volume story, sadly I have not had the time to get back to finishing reading it. Even in tiny print, the boxed set I have was at the very least four volumes, closer to six I think it was.

Thank you for sharing! I'm familiar with Son Goku because of some anime such as Dragon Ball Z and Naruto but honestly this is the first time I've read about his story.
