It's just my opinion, but perhaps they're a different group of "kitsune", like there are many different kinds of people in many different places. Being spiritual beings, it wouldn't be surprising that they know of other "groups", or are connected (actively or not) to the other groups.

Oooh... I'd like to hear more about these gray kitsune in Native American stories. I mean, honestly, this is a difficult thing for me to go into and explain because even I don't know all the details, but I know I'm a fox, I've known it practically my whole life, and I know I'm a gray fox and not a red one like a traditional kitsune. Thing is, I can't ever remember being a kitsune or a fox, just that I think like one and I know I'm one and that the more I find out about kitsune and foxes the more it feels like I'm learning about me. So if you could help, I'd really appreciate it.

I've read that story before! ^^ It's not what I was looking for, but it's nice...

Oh where to begin, . So some basics about Inari first shall we? Inari Is a shapeshifter. She can take on many forms and can even change her gender. Inari is the patron Kami of Kitsune. As we are her messengers. A follower of Inari (or any other deity for that matter) Is called a Myobu. Most Myobu are white but not all of them are. Now... Shinto and Buddhists believe different things about Inari, but there is a version of Inari in each sect. The Buddhists call her another name that I forget at the moment. Shinto priests will get mad as crap if you call Inari a fox. This Is kind of funny because they don't realize the true power Inari has. As for proper Inari worship... Well that what I've been trying to figure out. I got a book called "The Fox and the Jewel: Shared and Private meanings of Inari Worship" This book has been very informative. Well, It's getting late here. So I'll probably post more up here later. As I said more can be found on FA and DA (links to come when I have time to put them in my signature ><)

Now then the different categories of Kitsune.
The three main types are Myobu, Nogitsune, and Reiko(not completely sure on this one).
Myobu:
They are the servants of Inari. They are usually white in color with gray tips on their ears and tails. They are 'good' and do not play the tricks that the others do. They are bound by rules and common sense. They also take their orders from Inari, and are bound by her words. A kitsune can somehow still be considered a Myobu by working for any of the 'good' Deities as well. They also tend to be much older Kitsune and have lived in and among humans for a long time.
Their jobs can include but not limited to: Helping others in need, Keeping other kitsune from causing trouble, Killing/slaying demons and other evil creatures and such. These kind of Kitsune are generally Combat able, and will fight if they must.
I myself am a Myobu of Inari. Even under this category there are the Celestial Kitsune. They are angelic like Kitsune that serve in Inari's court... They are very rare, and only a handful exist. They are nine tailed, and have wings. You can be sure that one that has earned this status is very trusted by Inari.
Nogitsune:
These are the neutral kitsune. Most of them are pacifists. They will cause troubles sometimes and do not always understand human morals. They tend to be younger and have no real concept of right or wrong. Not all of them or evil, but they can be problematic to normal humans.
Reiko:
These are the 'evil' class of Kitsune. They seek out destruction and chaos. They go out of their way to cause mayham. They tend to be dark in color and mostly serve 'dark deities'. Not much is know about them, and I'm not even sure if they are called Reiko. So until that is confirmed, meh.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Different element Affinities.
Earth: They tend to be well centered and 'attached to the ground'. They use a lot of earth based defensive magic. They are tougher, and tend to have a great sense of the world around them. They tend to be calm and refuse to deviate from traditions and values.
Fire: They tend to be short tempered. Their fire can be harmful or beneficial. They tend not to trust too many and can go into a rage if pushed. These sort of kitsune must be approached carefully.
Wind: They tend to be a bit air headed and flighty. They constantly move around and never sit still. The can appear to be scatterbrained and hate to be tied down.
Water: They tend to be calmer but ruled by emotions. Outside stimulus affects them the most. They generally have healing powers and can calm others as well. Though they can be prone to being tainted by outside forces and have to be extra careful as to not become unstable emotionally or otherwise.
-- Those are the 4 main elements, Kitsune usually have 2 elemental affinities out of this group that rules them. They affect their personality, and their natural abilities. Elements like Light or Dark are not really part of this, as everyone has the capacity for both equally It depends on their choices.
There are other stranger categories like Music, Void, Sub elements and the like. Those I will not go over at this time. As these all tend to be just a smaller portion of the main 4 elements.

Seems like no one is responding on this thread any. So if any of you have questions about Kitsune, I'll do my best to answer them. Lets get some activity going here .

In my clan there was a kitsune named Shoh-Kine, he was a master of the water element, and at one time, my adoptive uncle. But he was always weaker than his younger brother, a Myobu named Mariku, one of Inari's ninja servants, and hated playing second fiddle to the 49th Kohryu; my father. He was driven mad and he was sealed in an empty pocket of the ether void when he murdered my father (right in front of me no less). Another was a girl named Haruko. She and I used to be close friends, but human life changes relationships in a rather frightening way.
