O-o ....Mass popularization of the term, coupled with media usage and bedtime stories.

the classification of such things are called "Faye"....
Pixies and Fairys are different, pixie is not a classification of fairy....
I personally know a pixie.

The term fairy and fae are roughly the Western equivalent for the term "youkai" in what types of beings they refer to. In fact, fairy is probably a better translation for the term youkai than "demon". So a fae could be any number of beings.

Depending on whether Fairy or Fae is the generic umbrella depends on what group of people (or "people") one is talking to. I know a fairy that fits pixie (of the popular usage) more, though in her case both can be correct, depending on what books and researchers one has had access to.

Does it mean that the small humanoid being with wings depicted in stories is not a fairy but instead a specific race of it?
